New Clean Energy Labs Commissioned by Aliko Dangote at ACE-FUELS Nigeria
ACE-FUELS’s flagship innovation facilities have been officially commissioned by Aliko Dangote, Nigerian businessman and Africa’s richest man. ACE-FUELS stands for the ‘African Centre of Excellence in Future Energies and Electrochemical Systems.’ Based at the Federal University of Technology Owerri, Nigeria, it was established to fill a skills and education gap in the field of renewable…

New research finds perovskite solar cells are resilient to dust, cutting manufacturing costs
Perovskite solar cells are much more tolerant to dust contamination in the manufacturing process than we assumed. This is good news for local manufacturing in low- and middle-income countries, because it suggests that perovskites can be fabricated under less controlled, and therefore less expensive, environments. These findings are from a new paper by Kathryn Lacey…

Africa’s First Next-Generation Solar Module: Part 1 – Knowledge Exchange
The African Centre of Excellence in Future Energies and Electrochemical Systems (ACE-FUELS) at FUTO Nigeria is planning to make the first next-generation solar module manufactured in Africa. Last summer, PhD student John Anyanwu visited the solar labs at Swansea University to take part in some essential training and knowledge exchange in the art of making…

Symposium on Exploring International Opportunities for Addressing Energy Access
In January, we held our first TEA@SUNRISE symposium on Exploring the International Opportunities for Addressing Energy Access by Bringing Next Generation Solar Technologies to Market. Hosted by the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) in South Africa, we had attendees joining both in-person and online from over twelve countries. PhD students Favour Ibezim and Panagiotis (Panos) Chatziangelakis…

New Project to Set up First Full-Scale Demonstration of Next-gen Solar Manufacturing in Africa
A new initiative will develop local manufacturing capabilities of perovskite solar modules in Nigeria, Rwanda, Kenya, and South Africa. Ultimately, the project plans to establish the first full-scale demonstration of next-generation solar manufacturing in Africa while maximising sustainability and empowering local communities. Funded by the UKRI Ayrton Challenge Programme, REACH-PSM (Resilient Renewable Energy Access Through…
